Please note the plinth seen in the photographs is NOT included in the sale. This 401 is in good overall cosmetic and superb mechanical condition. I have a great deal of experience with the Garrard 401 (and 301 having owned over 40). This 401 has been in my ownership for some time but was not running that well when I acquired it, they rarely are, so it just sat on the shelf! I have now fully serviced it prior to sale and it is now running.
Eerily quiet, speed stable and quick starting. Please see the full service details below. He paint finish on the top plate is very acceptable, there is NO dust bug mark, there are some slight oxidisation blemishes on the back left side (see photograph #12) and evident under the paint in a couple of very small areas. The Control Panel, Lettering and Switches are all good, there is slight wear to the Switch Finger Plates and a very small dink directly on the 33rpm marking. The Platter Mat and Centre Disc are in lovely condition.
With super sharp Strobe Markings. I have fitted a new set of Classic Turntable Company Cam Housing Grommets - old ones perish and go hard.
New ones make a dramatic difference to controlling vibration and noise transfer. The Drive Wheel is very supple and in beautiful condition without flat spots. The Platter Brake works correctly, start up is quick and the platter settles to the set speed almost instantly and is absolutely stable. Test run for over 2 hours and once set it needed no further speed / pitch adjustment.
The underneath is beautifully clean - the Control Rods and Levers are in perfect condition, the card Serial Number Label is still attached to the underside and the Wiring is clean and undamaged. There is a new Mains Lead fitted. The User Guide with Storage Sleeve and a Mounting Template, Brand new set of Mounting Bolts, Nuts and Washers are included.
The original Garrard 401 Box is a bit tatty. Are there apart from the Platter packing. I will double box it to protect the. I have fully serviced this 401 before sale. This included stripping, cleaning and freshly oiling the top and bottom main Bearings. But most importantly I have completely stripped the Motor and cleaned and oiled both the top and bottom Motor Bearings. The bottom motor bearing normally gets no attention because it is impossible to oil effectively without dismantling.
I have also checked and lubricated a number of other difficult to get to (unless the turntable is stripped down) key components which all makes for a nice running and smoothly operating 401. Along with a good Idler Wheel, a well maintained motor is vital to a silent, smooth running and long lasting 401. Do not underestimate the benefit of this full service, it pays dividends in audio performance and longevity. If using a 60Hz supply you would need to ignore the platter strobe markings and use a separate Strobe Disc or similar.
